Liturgical Service

Altar Servers

Boys and girls from 5th grade through high school may have the opportunity to assist the priest at Mass. Servers should be mature enough to understand their responsibilities and to carry them out well and with appropriate reverence. They should have already received holy communion for the first time and normally receive the eucharist whenever they participate in the liturgy.

Boys and girls with a desire to become altar servers should speak with the priest.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC) have the sacred privilege and responsibility of assisting the priest in the distribution of Holy Communion. EMHC's require training and commissioning in order to serve.

Lector

When the Sacred Scriptures are read in the Church, God himself speaks to his people, and Christ, present in his word, proclaims the Gospel. Therefore, the readings from the Word of God are to be listened to reverently by everyone, for they are an element of the greatest importance in the Liturgy. Although in the readings from Sacred Scripture the Word of God is addressed to all people of whatever era and is understandable to them, a fuller understanding and a greater efficaciousness of the word is nevertheless fostered by a living commentary on the word, that is, by the Homily, as part of the liturgical action. (General Instruction of the Roman Missal [GIRM], no. 29)

The lector is instituted to proclaim the readings from Sacred Scripture, with the exception of the Gospel. He or she may also announce the intentions for the Universal Prayer and, in the absence of a psalmist, recite the Psalm between the readings. Lectors must be confirmed Catholics living in communion with the Church.

Usher

The ushers provide an invaluable service in maintaining order and direction as well as welcoming visitors and newcomers to Mass on Sundays and Holydays. They also collect the offerings of the congregation during Mass and lend a helping hand as needed. Ushers generally volunteer for a consistent Mass time from week to week and their service at each Mass is coordinated by a head usher.
